Here are 5 easy ways to start to pray for Iran today.

IRN 20100503 Shiraz Park People (286)1. Pray for the church.

Pray for the church to continue to boldly proclaim the gospel, plant churches, reach out to the felt need of the poor, needy and hopeless. [1]

Since Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s warning in 2010 of the ever-expanding influence and numbers of house churches, the treatment of Christians has rapidly worsened. The regime tries to destroy those who reach out to converts and seekers by monitoring services, arresting converts, banning Farsi language services and closing some churches. Attacks against Christian communities have increased, and the prohibition of house church activities is enforced more strictly. Yet the regime’s harsh treatment of Christians only further fuels the flames of church growth.

Preaching, evangelism and publishing Christian books in the Farsi language is illegal. Pray for protection for those seeking to spread God’s Word inside the country. It is said that children of political and spiritual leaders are leaving Islam for Christianity. Pray that more Muslims will discover the truth of the gospel. At least 40 Christians are in prison for their faith. Ask the Lord to sustain them. [2]

Use Romans 5:5 as your prayer guide:

And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

2. Pray for the financial situation of Iran.

Persia-2007 155The tough U.S. and European economic sanction on Iran are causing hyperinflation and many Persian people are suffering economically. Food, fuel and basic living expenses are increasing faster than salaries.

This is causing suffering, depression and despair.

These tough economic times is giving believers in Iran a new platform for outreach among their family and neighbors. People are very open in Iran to hearing the Good News of Christ.

Use Isaiah 55:1 as your prayer guide:

“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.”

3. Pray for dreams and visions among Muslims.

Thousands of Persians are sharing that they have seen angels or Jesus, “the Man in white clothes”. This is the main means through which Muslims in Iran are coming to Christ. There has been an increase of these divine revelations in the last 15 years.

Just read a few of these testimonies from inside Iran:

Iranian Women

  • “I was a prostitute…” – Leyla from Yazd called and talked to our counselors. She cried and told us her story. She felt unclean and desperately wanted to be right with God. We listened to her patiently and prayed with her to receive Christ as her savior. She called back to say she now knows she is forgiven by Jesus.
  • Islam University student comes to Christ – Abbas from Booshehr called Mohabat to do research for his school project. After several calls related to his questions about faith, he decided to give his heart to Christ.
  • “Addicted couple is set free” – Roya and her husband were hopeless and addicted to drugs for 27 years. One night she watched the Jesus Film on Mohabat TV and gave her heart to Christ. Instantly, she was freed from her addiction. Soon after, she shared her news with her husband and he received Jesus too. They called our station and shared on a live show of how the Lord healed them.
  • “I was ready to commit suicide!” – Rozha came on the air to let us know she prepared 300 pills that night to commit suicide. She was completely despairing, without hope for her future. Then she told us that she had come across our TV program, and called and gave her heart to Christ.

Use Joel 2:28-29 as your prayer guide:

“And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.”

4. Pray for Muslims to have more encounters with Scripture.

There is a dramatic and extensive increase of encounters with Jesus through the Scriptures. This is a popular way for Muslims to come to Christ. Amazingly enough, after dreams and visions, their contact with Scripture is their next step.

IRN 20100503 Shiraz Park People (115)Reza graduated from Islamic theology and was working to become a Molah. He came across Mohabat TV, and had been watching it for few weeks. He called to ask more questions about Christianity and asked to get a Bible so he can study it for himself. Once he read the Bible, he called us and couldn’t wait to share how sure he was that Jesus is the true God. Reza said the Bible clearly shows that Jesus is the only God, and was very thankful that Mohabat could send him the “Precious” Word!

Use 2 Timothy 3:16-17 as your prayer guide:

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

5. Pray for the unreached people of Iran.

According to Operation World there are 103 people groups of Iran and over 90% of them are unreached for Christ. When Persians are searching for Christ, sometimes they find people in their apartment complex, their family or even work. Pray for the spiritual needs of the religious minority including:

  • The Zoroastrians or Parsees
  • The Baha’i
  • The Persian-speaking Jews
  • The nomadic and semi-nomadic Luri and Bakhtiari and the Turkic Qashqai
  • The various Kurdish peoples of northwest and northeast Iran
  • The Turkic Azeri and Turkmen in the north are closely related, but have scarcely had any positive contact with Christianity
  • The peoples of the southeast – the Baloch and Brahui
  • The Gypsy communities [3]

Use John 4:35 as your prayer guide:

Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.

A Prayer for Persians

God you are enthroned in majesty above the cherubim in heaven. And You are God of all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the heavens and the earth. Listen closely, LORD, and hear; open Your eyes, LORD, and see. The Persians in Iran are seeking truth.  Islam is completely hollow and their hearts are vacant. Open their eyes and ears so they might turn their hearts to You.  Save them by the thousands, filling the void in their lives.

LORD, You know how hopeless the people in Iran feel. They are longing for a change. I hear them wish for war to come to their country to bring such a change. They need to know that true hope and peace can only be found in you. Many Persians are turning to drugs. Put an end to the corruption that allows so many drugs to come from the fields in Afghanistan. Young women and girls struggle with eating disorders and depression. Show them how You view them – beautiful creations. Help them to find lasting, inner beauty in Christ.

The new believers in Iran struggle with fear. They don’t know how to explain their new faith to family and friends. They are afraid of how they’ll be received. They are reluctant to meet with other believers – “what if they are secret police or radical Muslims posing as believers?” Give them courage and boldness. Provide safe places for new believers to meet. Start many churches throughout the country that are firmly grounded on the truth found only in the Bible. God, the young Persian Church that does exist needs your help. Help believers to let go of worldly habits. Help them to trust one another and to cooperate, growing together in love and unity.

Thank you, Jesus, for paying the high price to provide forgiveness for our sin. The Persians are direct descendants of groups that first heard this Good News at Pentecost in the Book of Acts. (the Elamites, Acts 2) Renew their desire to follow you.

Help me to see the Persians as you see them. Show me what I can do in order for them to hear the Gospel. Give me opportunities to share my faith with Persians. Teach me how to pray consistently for them.

Build Your church in Iran and use the Persians so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You are the LORD God – you alone!

(inspired partially by 2 Kings 19:14-37) [4]
